  • Breast Cancer Symposium Update

    Dr. Karen Smith is a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital, and a member of the Johns Hopkins Breast Cancer Program and the Ovarian Cancer Program. Dr. Smith is also an assistant professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

    Dr. Smith has expertise in breast cancer, cancer genetics, cancer survivorship, clinical trials, and toxicology.

  • Tools for Healing During and After a Cancer Diagnosis: Using EMDR as a Response to Trauma

    Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) originally was developed as a treatment approach for post-traumatic stress disorder. Evidence-informed psychotherapy that targets emotional distress and associated physical symptoms, EMDR can help reduce the physical and emotional distress of cancer and side effects successfully. Yvette Colón, PhD, BCD, LMSW, will focus on how EMDR works, its benefits, and how it can be useful to people who have been diagnosed with cancer.

    This professionally facilitated monthly support group provides a safe space for young women diagnosed with breast cancer at age 40 or younger to find friendship, information, and mutual support. Shared concerns may include relationships, career, sexual health, body image, fertility and more.

    Enjoy an hour of relaxation and literally blow away stress with Hope Connections Relaxation & Tranquility facilitator, Larry Bricker. Learn and practice techniques to experience calmness, gratitude, and mental field trips. Explore the ABCs of tranquility: Awareness, Breathing, and Compassion. Let wisdom from Yoda help you enhance resilience, health, and happiness. No previous experience with meditation required.

  • Patricia Horning, PT, DPT. CLT, CDNT, from ReVital/NovaCare Rehabilitation will discuss how cancer rehabilitation may assist in managing pain, fatigue, weakness, and neuropathy. She will discuss strategies to prepare for treatment, how to stay strong during your cancer journey, and get back to your family, job and the things you care about most.

  • Young Adults with Cancer In-Person Meet Up

    Hope Connections, Life with Cancer, and Smith Center are hosting an in-person get-together for young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer. This gathering is an opportunity to connect with your peers who truly get this experience. Come for good conversations, fun, and light refreshments.

    This event is for people with cancer in their 20’s/30’s/early 40’s. We hope you can join us!

  • Navigating the Disability Process

    Emily Brown with Patient Advocate Foundation will discuss how to access disability benefits when faced with cancer. This session will focus on Social Security disability programs and benefits. Specific topics will include understanding eligibility guidelines, navigating the application process, overcoming denials, and understanding the disability timeline.

  • Good Nutrition for Cancer Care

    Patricia Guay-Berry (registered dietitian and board-certified specialist in oncology nutrition) will discuss ways to prepare for and cope with the challenges of active treatment and healthier habits afterwards. She will also focus on strategies that: ease side-effects and maintain a healthy weight; prevent breaks in treatment and promote healing; and make simple changes that lead to healthier living.

  • Drive Out Cancer Annual Golf Tournament

    Drive Out Cancer Golf Tournament is one of Hope Connections' most popular events. Our annual golf tournament is held in late September at the beautiful Musket Ridge Golf Course, with room for 120 golfers. Teams of 4 golfers play in a flighted scramble format. Breakfast and lunch are provided. Prizes are awarded for each flight!
